The video production process
An Overview of the Stages
Effective productions are usually the result
of a good partnership between the client and us: a process of stating
ideas and refining them, with a mechanism for receiving approval
at each stage to check we are on the same wavelength. Below we provide
an overview of the necessary stages.
Production Brief
The production brief is the basis for a shared
understanding between Walnut Media and our client. It should clearly
state the purpose of the production, the target audience and the
central theme together with supporting ideas. It should explain
how the production fits into a wider communication strategy and
should cover the basic logistical considerations, such as the proposed
distribution plan, production deadlines and budget.
Proposal
From the brief we will produce a proposal.
This document contains our analysis of the communication needs together
with our creative solution in the form of a treatment.
Script
Once the proposal has been approved, we will
develop the script through further research and consultation with
the client. Visits to locations are often required to assist this
process.
Shoot
Prior to the shoot, the director visits the
locations to consider logistical issues such as access and power
sources. We issue call sheets that outline the shooting schedule
to everyone involved. A client representative normally attends the
shoot to provide assistance.
Editing & Post-Production
The footage is first 'digitised' and assembled
to form an 'off-line' or draft version of the programme. This demonstrates
the general shape and look of the programme. On client approval
we proceed to the finished version at high quality. At this stage
any special visual effects are added and the audio is dubbed to
form the soundtrack, often with a commentary added.
Exhibition & Distribution
The finished programme then needs to be duplicated,
distributed and exhibited. Though often neglected, this aspect should
receive careful consideration. Frequently we co-ordinate multiple
copying and packaging as well as the design and production of accompanying
elements.
Measurement & Review
It is important to assess the effectiveness
of a communication against its specified objectives. Measurement
and review is an integral part of the production process. Information
gained can be fed into subsequent projects. This may help to identify
other communication needs and pinpoint any deficiencies to be corrected
in future projects.
